Ash Connor reflects on (almost) 200 games in charge

Joint boss Ash Connor perhaps has more reason than most to hope for three points when Golcar United face Nelson.

Connor will take charge of his 200th game as United boss, along with brother Gav, when the Weavers’ face Nelson at home on 12th December.

And for Ash it is a magic landmark he is very proud to have achieved.

“It is a good achievement that we are looking forward to,” he said. “We only found out the other day that it was our 200th game.

“The progress that we have made in that time is massive. When we started seven seasons ago we had an average park field. 

“It's brilliant what has been achieved in that time and the facilities are constantly improving, this is down to the amount of good people we have volunteering at the club on a weekly basis which all the management and players really appreciate. It's been an unbelievable journey so far and one me and Gav are immensely proud of.”

Connor joined the club as a player during the 2013/14 season before moving into the manager’s dugout with his brother as player-manager.

It was a move which laid the foundations for success at the Skye Direct Stadium with Golcar losing out on the league title by a point in his first season at the helm.

But trophies eventually followed with United winning the West Riding County Amateur Football League and Huddersfield and District Cup double two seasons in a row.

“We managed to build a strong team then,” reflected Connor. “We always had a team that would work hard. 

“We had a good group of lads who would do things together and had a strong team spirit.

“We won the league in my last game as player manager when we beat Littletown 1-0 and it was my first league trophy as a manager. That along with our promotion to the North West Counties are probably my proudest moments as Golcar manager.”

But, despite so many games in charge, Connor knows he has plenty more to learn.

“As we have gone on, and stopped playing, you learn all the time,” he said.

“We are adapting all the time and I think one of our biggest things is to try and be as organised as we can be and to make sure we have a good group that we can work with.”

    Well done lads , nice to see it’s going well .Fond memories of playing cricket with you at Linthwaite all those years ago. Football always being your first love.
