Gav Connor urges Golcar to go out and enjoy themselves

Joint manager Gav Connor is urging Golcar United’s players to go out and enjoy themselves as they look to sort out their home form.

Golcar have lost all four NWCFL games at The Skye Direct Stadium this season with Connor believing the large crowds could be having a negative impact on the players. 

“The be all and end all is our home form is costing us and we’re not too sure what the exact reason is,” he said.

“Our away from is decent. We have played reasonably well and got decent results so we’re trying to put our finger on why it's going wrong at home.

“We’ve got decent crowds and should be getting up for those type of games, but for some reason it looks like it's having the opposite effect.

“Teams are coming to us, seeing the crowds and the buzz around the place and it’s building them up for the games and not us.

“We just need to relax a bit more and focus on the football. We’re trying to get the mindset that people are watching and you can build yourself up for the game, but also control yourself so we concentrate on what we're doing on the field.”

But Connor believes his side are not far off the mark and can turn it around with a bit of good luck.

“We have not played bad in any home game and are not too far off the mark,” he added.

“It is fine margins right now, particularly in the game against Steeton (2-0 defeat). We hit the post, we hit the bar and the keeper had a blinder.

“If we had taken our chances and scored a goal either side of half-time then the game could have been 3 or 4-0 to us.

“It was similar against Backup, we just couldn't find the back of the net.

“It is frustrating. Last year we were unbeaten at home in the league and now we can’t buy a win.”


Golcar expect to return to action at Prestwich Heys on Sat 5th December, before facing Nelson at home a week later. And Connor is expecting a tough test at Prestwich as his troops look to hit the ground running when football resumes.

He said: “We have had a break, the players have kept fit over the last few weeks and we’re itching to get going.

“We want to hit the ground running and put in the performances at home that we have been doing away.

“Prestwich are a good team and we have a lot of respect for them.

“They beat Bury, who are the team to beat in our league, so we know they are going to be tough to beat..

“We know they will be ready for when we turn up. We want a good performance and to take that into the game against Nelson.”

NEW SIGNING: Jacob Buchanan

  By Golcar United Golcar United are delighted to announce the signing of Jacob Buchanan and would like to give him a huge welcome to The Skye Direct Stadium. Jacob Buchanan has become the club's fifth signing of the season after joining us from Eccleshill United. Buchanan has been at Eccleshill since the start of the 2019-20 season and made a number of appearances for their first team before the league was curtailed due to Covid-19. He has continued to play for their side this season before he made the switch to Golcar this evening. Buchanan, a versatile player who can play in a  number of positions including as a winger, has enjoyed a successful semi-professional career which has taken in spells at Brighouse Town, Emley, Campion and Liversedge.
